Norway & The Euro
We believe that Norway will eventually join the Euro, probably in 2004, along with about a dozen other countries. It is not known whether any official plans have been made to produce pattern designs for a set of Norwegian euro coins.
Political Considerations
Despite its neutrality, Norway was not able to avoid occupation by Germany in World War II. In 1949, neutrality was abandoned and Norway became a member of NATO. Discovery of oil and gas in adjacent waters in the late 1960s boosted Norway's economic fortunes. The current focus is on containing spending on the extensive welfare system and planning for the time when petroleum reserves are depleted. In referenda held in 1972 and 1994, Norway rejected joining the EU.
Unofficial Patterns
On a number of previous occasions, especially before major coinage changes, pattern coins have been produced as a design exercise or to test public opinion. Many of these have been privately produced. A privately produced pattern set of British euro coins has already been produced, and met with intense demand, despite almost negligible marketing. Original priced at around �40, these have changed hands for over �250 on e-bay.
We have not yet seen any suggested designs for Norwegian euro coins, but...
